Reaper is the daw you always wanted if you are looking for a great community that will welcome you with open arms, in my opinion, the ability of the developers of this daw to listen to the community is undoubtedly the best of this software.
Reaper can look intimidating, it looks like software from the '00s rather than a current daw, usually, people who want to give a chance to this daw are novices in the field of music production, so they might be overwhelmed by many aspects of this daw, either the poor quality in the visual aspect, the unpopularity of this daw in the mainstream or simply the prejudices that each person may have.
Benjamin from Bob Heavens. Company Size: 1 employee. Industry: Music. I started using Reaper when I realized that my version of Cubase was obsolete. A friend recommended it and I tried it, band members started using it as well and now we can teach each other things. I use Reaper on Windows now and have not tried the Linux build but I think that's great! I didn't have any issues, but I think I only used it for editing, maybe not for recording.
It was free to try and there are tons of tutorials online and other people using Reaper to learn tips and how to use it. The EQ plugin interface is very nice as well. The only problems I've run into have involved things that I overlooked or didn't completely understand. I have been able to fix them, easily though not always quickly. I can't say that I have anything I like least about it. It's great.
A friend started using Reaper and told me about how cool it is. Drag and drop to import, arrange, and render. Freely mix audio, MIDI, video, still image media on any track.
Intuitive zoom, scroll, scrub, jog, tab to audio transient, MIDI navigation. Open multiple projects simultaneously in separate tabs. Easily manage tempo, time signature, and varispeed changes. Separate audio or MIDI into freely arrangeable takes and lanes for easy comping.
Easily copy or move regions, to quickly try out alternate arrangements. Apply FX in real time, or non-destructively render FX output. Real-time network FX processing: use other local machines as an FX farm. Automatic plug-in delay compensation PDC. Industry-leading performance and multiprocessor utilization. Sidechain any plug-in, even if the plug-in does not natively support sidechaining. Easily extensible. Tightly coded - installers are around 10 MB, updates usually install in less than a minute.
Rapid, efficient development - new features and optimizations are added quickly and often. Very active, enthusiastic, and helpful user forum, get help quickly.
Fantastic and readable user-created user guide. An honest business model that aims to provide the best possible user experience. As production practices evolve, so does the software, which is currently at version 6. Weighing in at just 20MB, any half-way decent internet connection will have you up and running in seconds. Other DAWs tend to have a templated approach to kick start their sessions. Instead, you have a blank canvas and not much else.
This, however, seems to be in keeping with the Frankel philosophy of launching right into a customised workflow. A full suite of automation tools are on hand and comprehensive MIDI editing is available. What sets it apart is its ability to be customised.
