Fans stood and applauded the effort of their Bobcats, and Jordan was right there courtside to congratulate them on taking a big step forward. The day that Jordan took over was monumental for this franchise.
Now, he just needs to continue getting this team to resemble the types of teams he used to play for. Emeka Okafor was supposed to be a franchise center after leading his UConn Huskies to a national title and was selected right after Dwight Howard at No. Felton was taken fifth overall and May went at No. All three underwhelmed, but none was the kind of bust Adam Morrison was.
It is astonishing now to think that those four were supposed to be the nucleus of a contender. Morrison was the first draft pick in the Jordan era, who at the time was the manager of basketball operations. Morrison came to the league amongst a whirlwind of hype after an unbelievable career at Gonzaga. He scored Morrison showed no semblance of offensive consistency whatsoever and was a nightmare on defense throughout his rookie year.
He then tore his ACL in the preseason of his sophomore campaign and again slugged through his third season before getting traded to the Lakers , where he flamed out after a year and a half. What hurt most is that he averaged There is nothing positive to say about his brief stay in the league.
The main reason the Bobcats did not have any sustained level of success was because they squandered far too many high draft picks.
One could make the argument that every player the Bobcats drafted in the first round in their 10 years has not lived up to expectations with the possible exceptions of Kemba Walker and Gerald Henderson. The jury is still out on Michael Kidd-Gilchrist as well as Bismack Biyombo who came over in a trade on draft night , but early impressions are weak. Felton, May, D. Augustin and Alexis Ajinca all flamed out as well. Despite all the poor draft picks, none stung quite like Morrison.
He had otherworldly hype coming to town, and he fell flat on his face. It is unfortunate that his poor showing will forever cast a shadow over Bobcats history. It may have been forgettable due to the lack of success the team had, but Gerald Wallace was a complete monster during his Bobcats days.
Wallace came to Charlotte as an irrelevant cast-off from the Sacramento Kings. He left as the man affectionately known as "Crash," and he will go down in history as the only All-Star to don a Bobcats uniform. In that 21 game losing streak, the numbers are even more disturbing. The Cats lost those 21 games by an average of Charlotte has lost 10 of those games by 20 points or more including three of the last four by 32, 26, and 28 points respectively.
The Wizards have won 18 games all season. The offensive triple crown of futility. The starting lineup against the Wizards on Monday night — D. Mullens, and Bismack Biyombo combine for Kemba Walker only played 14 minutes off the bench and Tyrus Thomas was ejected for a flagrant 2 foul. The Bobcats bench has combined to play for 21 different teams in their NBA career. If they finished , that would give them a higher winning percentage than that Nets squad; five more wins sure sounds like a lot, but they already have two more of them than the Nets did through 37 games in And last year's Cavaliers team was no slouching slouch either.
Their record of will certainly give them a higher winning percentage than what the Bobcats post this year, and let's not forget that Cleveland wasn't even the worst team in the league in ; that distinction belongs to the Timberwolves. All the same, in the wake of LeBron's absence, people will probably remember the Cavs' record-breaking game losing streak more than they will the Bobcats' futility.
It doesn't help too that in a lockout-shortened season, it'll be difficult to appreciate just how bad the 'Cats are without an game slate to properly judge them. It's not unreasonable to ask if their record is skewed by the condensed schedule. Of course, none of these teams even compare to the official worst team ever, the Philadelphia 76ers, who had four double-digit losing streaks of 13, 14, 15 and 20 games and an overall record of -- the worst record in history.
They magically won five of seven games at one point in February, only to lose their last If not for an win against Seattle on January 7, they would have lost 35 games in a row. In fact of their nine wins, seven were by seven points or less.
In terms of roster talent, this Bobcats team -- depleted of even its marginal talent in recent years Emeka Okafor, Gerald Wallace, Raymond Felton, Stephen Jackson -- is truly abysmal.
